In folklore, the witching hour or devil's hour is a time of night that is associated with supernatural events, whereby witches, demons and ghosts are thought to appear and be at their most powerful. Definitions vary, and include the hour immediately after midnight and the time between 3:00 am and 4:00 am.

The term now has a widespread colloquial and idiomatic usage that is associated with human physiology and behaviour to more superstitious phenomena, such as luck.

The phrase "witching hour" began at least as early as 1762, when it appeared in Elizabeth Carolina Keene's Miscellaneous Poems. It alludes to Hamlet's line "Tis now the very witching time of night, When Churchyards yawne, and hell it selfe breakes out Contagion to this world."
There are multiple times that can be considered the witching hour. Some claim the time is between 12:00 am and 1:00 am, while others claim there is increased supernatural activity between sunset and sunrise. The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary identifies midnight as the time when witches are supposedly active.

During the time in which this term originated, many people had sleeping schedules that meant they were awake during the middle of the night. Nonetheless, there is psychological literature suggesting that apparitional experiences and sensed presences are most common between the hours of 2:00 am and 4:00 am, corresponding with a 3:00 am peak in the amount of melatonin in the body.

The idea of the witching hour may stem from the human sleep cycle and circadian rhythm – the body is going through REM sleep at that time, where the heart rate is slower, body temperature reduced, breathing pattern and blood pressure irregular. Sudden awakening from REM sleep could cause agitation, fear and disorientation in an individual.

During REM sleep, which usually occurs within the witching hour, unpleasant and frightful sleep disturbances such as parasomnias can be experienced, which include nightmares, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, night terrors, sleepwalking, homicidal sleepwalking and sleep paralysis.

During the night and well into the witching hour, symptoms of illnesses and conditions such as lung disease, asthma, flu and common cold seem to exacerbate because there is less cortisol in the blood late at night and especially during sleep. As such, the immune system becomes very active and white blood cells fight infections in the body during sleep, and this would thereby worsen the symptoms of fever, nasal congestion, cough, chills and sweating.

جن در لغت به معنی موجود پنهان و نامرئی بوده و تمام مشتقاتش بر استتار و پناهنی دلالت دارد. در فارسی به جن و شیطان،( پری، دیو و اهریمن) نیز می گویند که ظاهراَ این ترجمه غلط است. زیرا کلمه شیطان مترادف در فارسی ندارد و باید عین لفظ در ترجمه بیاید. جن به معنای شیء مستور است، یعنی شیء نامرئی و پوشیده شده و غیر قابل رویت. جن در عربی به همان معنای پوشیده ، پنهان، غیر مرئی ، یا پشت پرده در فارسی می باشد.

انسان را از گل خشكيده‌اى همچون سفال آفريد و جن را از شعله‌ى آتشى بى دود آفريد

از آیات شریفه قرآن استفاده می شود که انسان در آغاز خاک بوده و پس از آمیخته شدن با آب، تبدیل به گل شده و پس از مدتی این گل شکل لجن بدبویی به خود گرفته و… در آیاتی از قرآن خلقت انسان را از نطفه مختلط می شمرد که البته منظور از این آیات آفرینش انسان در مراحل و نسل های بعد است. به این ترتیب که جد نخستین ما از خاک و فرزندان او از نطفه امشاج آفریده شده اند. در قرآن درباره آغاز پیدایش انسان تعبیرات مختلفی است.

🔸در سوره روم آیه20 و من آیاته ان خلقکم من تراب. از نشانه های او این است که شما را از خاک آفرید.
🔻در سوره سجده آیه 7 می فرماید: و بدا خلق الانسان من طین. آفرینش انسان را از گل آغاز کرد.

🔻در سوره صافات آیه 11 می فرماید: انا خلقناهم من طین لازب. ما آنان را از گل چسبنده ای آفریده ایم.

🔻و در سوره انسان آیه 2 می فرماید: انا خلقنا الانسان من نطفه امشاج. خلقت انسان را از نطفه مختلط می شمرد.

🔻اما آیات 12و13و14 سوره مومنون مراحل خلقت جنین را بیان می کند. دقت کنیم که این آیات را 1400 سال قبل خداوند بر پیامبرش نازل کرد که یکی از اعجاز خلقت را بیان می کند. چیزی که امروز علم ثابت کرده نمی تواند گفته یک بشر باشد و یقینا خالص کلام خداوند است.

🔻آیه 12 و لقد خلقنا الانسان من سلاله من طین. انسان را از عصاره ای از گل آفریدیم.

🔻آیه 13 ثم جعلناه نطفه فی قرار مکین. سپس آن را نطفه ای در قرارگاه مطمئن (رحم) قرار دادیم.

🔻آیه 14 ثم خلقنا النطفه علقه فخلقنا العلقه مضغه فخلقنا المضغه عظاما فکسونا العظام لحما ثم انشاناه خلقا آخر فتبارک الله احسن الخالقین. سپس نطفه را به صورت علقه (خون بسته) و علقه را به صورت مضغه (چیزی شبیه گوشت جویده) و مضغه را به صورت استخوان هایی در آوردیم. از آن پس آن را آفرینش تازه ای ایجاد کردیم. بزرگ است خدایی که بهترین خلق کنندگان است.

کلمه انگلیسی ومپایر (Vampire) از واژه آلمانی Vampir گرفته شده که خود این واژه از زبان صربی به زبان آلمانی وارد شده. صرب ها از این کلمه برای اشاره به خفاش ها یا موجوداتی که توانایی پرواز دارن استفاده می کنن. البته عده ای هم این واژه رو به دو بخش " وم " به معنی دندان و "پیر" به معنی نوشیدن تقسیم می کنند.

There is no reference to vampires or werewolves in the Quran. With respect to aliens, I assume you mean extra terrestrials and not angels & jinns. And of his signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and what He has dispersed throughout them of creatures. And He, for gathering them when He wills, is competent. It says nothing of vampires per se. Islam speaks of the jinn species, made from smokeless fire, which in fact tells us little or nothing about their ultimate morphology. It speaks about angels made from light with wings, 2 - 4 pairs.

A vampire is a mythical creature that subsists by feeding on the vital essence (generally in the form of blood) of the living. In European folklore, vampires are undead humanoid creatures that often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighbourhoods which they inhabited while they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance, markedly different from today's gaunt, pale vampire which dates from the early 19th century.

The exact etymology is unclear.The term "vampire" is the earliest recorded in English, Latin and French and they refer to vampirism in Russia, Poland and North Macedonia.The English term was derived (possibly via French vampyre) from the German Vampir, in turn, derived in the early 18th century from the Serbian вампир (vampir). مشهورترین شخصیت خون‌آشام در عرصهٔ ادبیات، دراکولا نام دارد که زادهٔ ذهن برام استوکر، نویسنده بریتانیایی است. در ۱۸۹۷ برام استوکر دراکولا را نوشت. استوکر کنت قصه گوتیکی دراکولا را بر مبنای شخصیت پرنس منفور رومانی که در سدهٔ پانزدهم می‌زیست و اعمال خلاف اخلاق و دیگر آزارهای ترسناک او معروف بود، نوشت. او خون دشمنان خود را می‌نوشید و آن‌ها را به قتل می‌رساند. لقب او دراکولا به زبان رومانیایی معنای فرزند شیطان را می‌دهد. در افسانه‌ها آمده است که خون‌آشام‌ها دارای ۲ دندان نیش بلند هستند که در گردن قربانی فرومی‌کنند و آن‌ها را می‌کشند. البته گاهی ممکن است در برخی داستان‌های افسانه‌ای تمام دندان‌های خون‌آشام‌ها مانند دندان‌های نیش‌شان باشد، آن‌ها نسبت به دیگر جانداران زبان چسبنده و بلند و پهن‌تری دارند. درافسانه‌های عامیانه قدرت‌های فراطبیعی به این جانداران نسبت می‌دهند. آن‌ها می‌توانند از گوری به عمق ۲ متر از میان خاک و سنگ بیرون بیایند.

We all hold anger, fear, guilt, jealousy, hurt, and other damaging emotions. You can always ask your guardian angel to help you release emotional blockages during sleep before they inevitably build up into physical problems."

Guardian angels are best known for their work guarding people from danger, and guardian angels do focus on protecting you from evil while you're asleep, say some believers. The spiritual protection that guardian angels give you is the best protection you could ever hope to receive, writes Max Lucado in his book "Come Thirsty: No Heart Too Dry for His Touch."

Escorting Your Soul Out of Your Body

Angels may also help us leave our bodies during sleep and escort us to various places in the spiritual realm to learn something new through a practice called astral travel or soul traveling. Virtue writes in "Healing with the Angels," "Very often, our angels escort us to other-worldly places where we attend school and learn deep spiritual lessons. Other times, we may actually be involved in teaching others during these experiences of soul-traveling."

The sleep state is the ideal time for such spiritual lessons to occur, writes Yvonne Seymour in her book "The Secret World of Guardian Angels." She notes we spend one-third of our lives in sleep and we are more open and receptive in sleep. "Your guardian angel works on the ethereal plane, and writes your daily life scenes, and records of action for the physical plane. • بخش ناخودآگاه ذهن، جمله منفی را نمی‌فهد. بنابراین اگر با خودتان تکرار می‌کنید که من دیگر پرخوری نمی‌کنم، ضمیر ناخودآگاه تصویر پرخوری کردن‌تان را به خاطر می‌سپارد.
• هر آنچه برای شما اتفاق افتاده است، ناخوداگاه بدون اینکه تفکیکی قائل شود، همانطور که هست ثبت می‌کند.

• تجسم سازی

روشن‌بینی عبارت است از درک اشیا یا رویدادهایی که برای حس‌های پنجگانه، هیچ‌گونه محرکی که قابل احساس باشد را ارائه نمی‌دهد. روشن‌بینی در زبان فارسی جا افتاده‌است و به معنای واقعی واژهٔ Clair به معنای روشن و Voyance به معنای بینایی و بینش است. به کسی که توانایی روشن‌بینی داشته باشد، clairvoyant می‌گویند، یعنی کسی که روشن و واضح می‌بیند.

كلمه روشن‌بینی به معنی واضح دیدن و به مفهوم قوه ذهنی و بصیرت فوق‌طبیعی، قدرت درك و مشاهده اشیا و افرادی است كه نمی‌توان با كمك حواس عادی آنها را تشخیص داد.
▪ به‌طوركلی دو نوع روشن‌بینی وجود دارد:
۱) نوع اول ارادی كه با یك زندگی پاك و سالم امكان رشد می‌یابد و با آموزش می‌توان به شكلی موثر و مفید مورد استفاده قرار گیرد.
۲) نوع دوم غیرارادی است كه گاه می‌تواند خطرناك باشد. زیرا شخص با هستی و ذات‌های دیگر ملاقات می‌كند و جهان‌های دیگر را می‌بیند و می‌تواند تجارب روحی انسان را قبل از تولد و پس از مرگ و در جهان‌های نادیدنی ببیند. یك روشن‌بین قادر است چیزهایی مثل ارواح را كه با چشم ظاهر نمی‌توان دید و دارای فركانس بالاتری هستند، را ببیند. البته باید متذكر شد كه هر روشن‌بینی با هر نوع سطح آگاهی قادر به دیدن تمامی انواع ارواح نیست و تنها قادر است ارواحی كه از نظر آگاهی با آنها هماهنگ است را ببیند.

Bediuzzaman explains the proofs of existence of the angels through ten points in 29. Word Treatise.

1- ‘THE TRUTH’ REQUIRES THE EXISTENCE OF THE ANGELS

Although the earth is quite small when you compare it to the sky it is filled with the counscious beings such as human and jinn. This situation of the earth which is sometimes emptied and then filled indicates clearly that of course there are beings which have life and conscious in the skies which look like adorned palaces. These beings are called “angels” and “spirituals” in the tongue of Qur’an. Those also have four tasks just the same way the human beings and jinns in earth have. Firs, to watch the palace of the universe with amazement. Second, to scrutinize and read with care the book of universe. Third, to announce the dominicality of Allah (SWT) with conscience. Fourth, to represent the tasbihat of the universe and huge beings deliberately.

2- THE CONDITION OF THE UNIVERSE AND INSIDE OF IT PROVES THE EXISTENCE OF THE ANGELS

Everyone who has beauty and perfection wants to see and show his/her beauty and perfection. Allah (SWT), our Lord, created the universe adorned with countless artful ornaments, expressive beauties and significant decoration. Of course, these countless ornaments, beauties and decorations necessitate the existence and contemplation of admirers who think and hold in high esteem them. How the beauty requires an admirer and the food is given who is hungry. In the same way, these infinitely fine arts demand the hearts and spirits whose food and nourishment are just the beauty of the art. And these hearts and spirits are the angels.

Infinite ornaments, arts and decorations require infinite worship and contemplation. Since human beings and jinns have nafs (evil soul) and heedlessness could hardly fulfill the one in million of this infinite worship and contemplation. Thus, infinite angel kinds are needed to fulfill this infinite worship and contemplation task.

3- ‘THE WISDOM’ REQUIRES THE EXISTENCE OF THE ANGELS

Because Allah (SWT) who creates permenantly the life and conscious beings from the soil and water which are too distant from spirit and life and have less relations with them, of course, have some groups of conscious beings created from the other transparent materials such as noor and darkness, air and electricity which are more appropriate and deserved to spirit and life.

Bediuzzaman shows this truth with an example considering the necessity of “the life and consciousness”:

“ A substance without life is alone and awkward even if it is a huge mountain. Its connection is limited with only its place and the ones intervene with it. Whatever there is in the universe out of that substance is absent in terms of this substance. Since it does not have a life and consciousness it does not have a connection with life and living beings. Now, let us look at a living but little being, for example a bee… Once the life penetrates into that bee, it gains such a connection and relation with universe, and especially it signs such ‘a trade agreement’ with the flowers and plants on earth, it can say “ the earth is my trading house”. The bee has dealings and connection and friendship with many beings on earth with its senses called as ‘saika’ (driver) and ‘şaika’ (encourager) and which are not famous plus to the senses that are common in all animals and it has a right of usage on them.

It is understood from this example that the life has a huge effect even on a little being. Especially, while the life is getting on the human life level which is the highest level of life, it gains an immense breadth and expansion. As human kind looks round his home with his consciousness and mind which are the light of the life, he/she pays a visit and travels lofty, spiritual and material worlds spiritually. And these worlds may pay a visit to ‘spiritual mirror’ of human being.

Summarily, it can be claimed that unles there is life, existence is not existence. It has no distinction than the non-existence.

Bediuzzaman who stated the importance of the life and consiousness in that way explains why there should be the angels in terms of wisdom in the following way:

“Now that, the life and consciousness is that important and we see that there is a perfect regularity and flawless and stable structure in that universe. And this our wrecked and little earth on which we live has been filled with countless beings which have life, spirit and intellect. After all these explanations, that truth is grasped by mind and heart swiftly and it takes root with a doubtless faith: Those skies which look like alight palaces and huge towers are not without life and spirit and qite empty; of course they are full. As fish lives in the water, there are shining settlers in the fire of the sun. That they are not seen because of the distance or incapability of our eyes or because they hide is not a proof for their absence. Because not to be seen is not a proof for absence. We see that the Eternal Divine Power creates his countless living and spirited creatures from the soil and water which are the most ordinary being and abysmal and dense and far distance from spirit and life. And he transforms the dense and dull materials (such as soil and water) into transparent and pleasent materials through life with importance. And he disperses the light of the life on everything mostly. And he adorns most of the things with light of the consciousness. Of course, Allah (SWT), All-Erudite and All-Powerful, does not neglect and leave lifeless the other mobile transparent and pleasent materials which are close and appropriate to the spirit like noor and ether material with his flawles power and complete wisdom. He does not leave them without life and consciousness. Of course, he creates living and conscious creatures mostly from noor, darkness, ether material, air and even from the meanings and words. Some of them are the angels and and some of them are spirituals and some are jinns.

4- RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATTER AND SPIRIT POINTS TO THE EXISTENCE OF ANGELS AND SPIRITUALS

While Bediuzzaman proves the existence of angels he compares the matter and spirit with each other. It is in the following way:

The matter cannot stand up on its own. It stands with a meaning. That meaning is life and spirit. The matter is not what is served but it is servant. It serves a truth to be maturated. And that truth is life. And the essence of the life is spirit. It is clearly understood that since the matter is not manager, it is not applied by the others. The perfections are not demanded from him. On the contrary, the matter is imprisoned. It obeys the basic principles. It acts according to the ways of these principles. And these basic principles are life, spirit and consciousness. The fact is that the matter is a ‘cortex’, or a ‘foam’, or an ‘appearance’ which is usually ready to crack or melt or tear or deform or scatter.”

Bediuzzaman explains this truth with such an example:

“A microscobic living being has very sharp senses. They are such sharp and accurate senses that it can hear the voice of its friend and see its livelihood. That attitude of this animal shows that the more the matter becomes smaller the more the indicators and signs and results of its life increase. The noor of the spirit is intesified. It is as if the matter gets thinner and departs from our material world, it closes to the realm of spirit and life and consciousness and heat of the spirit and noor of the life show themselves more severely.”

Is it ever possible that on one hand there are those indicators and dribbles of life and spirit and consciousness on matter sphere and on the other hand the inner world, the world of melekut and world of spirits which are under the sphere of matter are not full of the beings which have spirit and consciousness that is angels and spirituals?

5- THAT ALL PHILOSPHICAL MOVEMENTS AND RELIGIONS AGREE ON THE MEANING OF THE ANGELS IS AN EFFICIENT EVIDENCE PROVING EXISTENCE OF THE ANGELS

It can be claimed that all philosophical schools called as rationalists and all religions which favor metaphysical knowledge about origins or ultimate causes agree on existence of the angels unanimously though they name them differently.

For example the philosephers of the school of Meshaiyyun (Aristotelianism) which favor matter over spirit and claim that we can reach the truth just through the reason and refuse the wahy (revelation), accepting the the meaning of the angels, say “there is a spiritual truth inside of a kind of being differently from its material structure.” They define the angels in this way. And again the philosophers of old school of Ishraqiyyun (the Illuminationist philosophy), being obliged to accept existence of the angels, namig them wrongly for equivalence of angels as “ten minds” and “arrangers and governers of species” which are claimed descented from each other and efficint in creation and governing of universe. Again all religions accept the existence of an assigned angel for every sort of being such as “angel assigned for the monuntains”, “angel assigned for the seas”, “angel assined for rain” with the inspiration and teaching of the wahy (revelation) and they titled them in this way. Even the materialists and naturalists who accept only what they see have been obliged to accept the truth of angels, being unable to refuse the existence of the angels, calling them as “the spreading power without barrier”

6- THE PRINCIPLES WHICH GOVERN THE UNIVERSE INDICATE THE EXISTENCE OF THE ANGELS

The principles which govern the universe and the positive sciences accept are not sufficient for emergence of the life. Because these principles which are taking place do not have existence but they have only scientific existence. Thus, they are cosidered nearly ‘non-existent’. If they are not servants of Allah called angels who will represent these principles and hold control of everything, these principles will not come about to scene and appear. They cannot be a stable ‘truth’. However the life is a stable truth. A delusive principle cannot take over a stable truth.

For example, If we comparison the principles in universe to the laws of a state, the angels are like the government wich applies the laws. If it is not the government, the laws cannot govern a state on their own. Because the law does not have an existence. It is a scientific rule. These principles are understood, applied and appear through only a power or authority, that is a government.

The human kind is an ummah. It is carrier and representative of Divine Law which derives from the Kalam attribute of Allah (SWT). In the same way, the angels are also such an immense ummah that workers group of them are carriers and representatives of the laws which derive from Will attribute of Allah and wrongly named as ‘nature’. They are a kind of worshippers of Allah who are subjugated to the Divine will and power who has real effect. Each one of the stars in the sky and celestial bodies is a mosque and sanctuary of them.

7- BEING SEEN OF ONLY AN ANGEL THROUHGOUT HUMAN HISTORY IS AN EVIDENCE PROVING THE EXISTENCE OF ANGELS GENERALLY

When we prove the existence of one of the angels we prove the existence of all the angels at the same time. Being seen of one individual of the angels, the existence of all the angels is known. Because the ones who refuse the existence of the angels refuse them totally. And if someone accepts the existence of one of them he has to accept the existence of all of them. If that is the truth, we can say that: All the members of the religions of all times from Adam to now agree on the existence of the angels. They agree on that we can talk to the angels and see them and narrate from them as the groups of people speak to and meet with each other. Was it ever possible that that allience would continue unless anyone of the angels was seen and their existence could be felt? Is it ever possible that a groundless thought would continue without change and it would survive throughout all humane revolutions and thought changes?

8- THAT ALL PROPHETS AND AWLIYAS AGREE ON THIS MATTER PROVES ITS TRUTHNESS

The prophets and awliyas are models for morality, integrity, merit and truthfulness for human kind. That their allience on the existence of the angels and reporting from them though they came in different times and places proves the existence of the angels. Because they are expert and specialist and consultative authority in this matter. The words that are uttered by two experts of a field concerning a matter of that field are more valuable and superior than the words stated by thousands of people who are unexpert of that field. The prophets and awliyas are in the probatory position on the matter of the angels. A probatory reduces the refusals of thousands rejectors to nonentity. Is it ever possibel that the witnessings of the Glorius Qur’an and the prophet Muhammad Peace and Belssings be upon Him, the commentator and disseminator of Qur’an, contain doubts.

9- THE WISDOM OF REPRESENTING THE REMEMBERENCE OF EACH CREATURE THROUGH SPEECH AND CONSCIOUSNESS PROVES AND SHOWS THE ANGELS

Our Lord thus speaks in the 44. verse of the Isra sura: “there is not a thing but celebrates His praise” Yes, as does a flower remembrance (tesbihat) of his creator through the tongue of the adornments on it, the huge garden of earth renders the regular and general task of remembrance (tesbihat) like an immense flower. As a tree has a remembrance (tesbihat) with its leaves, fruits and flowers the huge sky praises his Lord with its suns, stars and moons which are in the place of its words. Like these epitomes each one of all inanimate beings has duties and tasbihat like the ones who are alive and have consciousness although they are appearingly inanimate and without consciousness. The angels are representatives of these inanimate beings in the realm of malakut (alem’ul malakut) and express their tasbihat. In the same way, the inanimate beings are examplers, homes and mosques of angels in the concrete realm of witnessing (alamu’ul shahadah). Thus, all beings have a deputy angel who is appropriate fort hem and like their spirit and knows and states verbally and proclaims to the universe the divine names and sacred meanings which are expressed and proclaimed through the tongue of disposition and offers them to divine presence. That is, divine wisdom requires the worship and tasbihat which every being performs through tongue of disposition to be performed also with consciousness and verbally. This wisdom necessitates the existence of the angels and their general duties.

10- DIVINE WISDOM REQUIRES THE EXISTENCE OF SERVANTS WHO WILL SERVE DELIBERATELY FREE OF CHARGE IN THE PLACE OF UNIVERSE

There are four kinds of servants of Allah (SWT) who employ them in the palace of universe. The plants and inanimate serve free of charge uncosciously in the authority of an all knowing for important duties. The animals serve for quite general goals for a little wage unconsciously. Men and jinns serve for obeying divine purposes deliberaely obtaining a share for their soul in everything and supervising and performing leadership for the other servants in exchange for to kinds of wages; one is advance and the other is late payment. It is understood in that point that there should be another fourth kind of servants. These servants resemble to men in respect of serving for general purpose of Allah with a conscious worship. And on the contrary to the human being they are isolated from their sensual pleasures and advanced little rewards. They work with sincerity being contented with the pleasure, bliss, perfetction stemming from loyalty to Allah (SWT), to be with view and order and complaisance and plan and name of Allah (SWT). Their rewards are inherent in their obedience and service.

AS A CONSEQUENCE

‘The Truth’ necessitates the existence of the angels. The condition and inner face of the universe proves the existence of the angels. ‘The Wisdom’ requires the existence of the angels. The relationship between matter and spirit indicates the existence of the angels and spirits. That all the phiolosphical and religious movements agree on the meaning of the angels is a strong evidence which proves the existence of the angels. The laws which are prevailing in the universe shows the existence of the angels. That even one of the angels was seen in human history shows that they generally exist. That all prothets and awliyas agree on angels proves this fact. The wisdom that to show the tasbihat of every being which they do through tongue of disposition with verbal speech proves the existence of the angels. The Divine wisdom requires the existence of servants who will work consciously in palace of universe on unwaged.

metempsychosis. n. transmigration of the soul, whereby upon death a soul takes up residence in another body, human or animal.

Metempsychosis is also called "transmigration of souls" and describes the process of a soul being transferred to another body after death. This transfer can happen between any human and / or animal body. For example, a human can come back as another human, or as a bird or animal or reptile of some kind. Likewise, animal souls can come back as human. Metempsychosis is different from reincarnation because the soul is not going "up" or "down" the ladder as a result of good or bad actions in life. Instead, the soul chooses a new body as a way of gaining diverse experiences.

Pythagoras was the first to theorize metempsychosis as a potential life after death experience, and then Plato expounded on the theory in his Republic. While it is unclear whether Plato actually believed in metempsychosis, he was responsible for its popularization. In Plato's story, a warrior called Er travels to another, immortal realm, and then brings back knowledge to the mortal realm. While he is there, he sees metempsyschosis happening. The souls of the dead are congregated, choosing new bodies to inhabit—animals choosing to become different animals, men choosing to become other men, birds choosing to become men, and even gods choosing to become athletic heroes. When the soul had decided on its new home, it was told to drink from the River Lethe, and then sent down to earth to be born. There are some instances in the Bible of fallen angels taking on human or animal form (Genesis 3:1–7; 6:1–4) and of holy angels appearing as men (Mark 16:5) but this is not considered metempsychosis because the spirit is only inhabiting a body for a short period of time, not taking ownership of it until death.

While metempsychosis is a rather poetic idea, it is not a biblical one. Metempsychosis, reincarnation, and all other iterations of this myth are refuted by the Scriptures, which say that man has only one chance to live and only one time to die, after which he must face the judgment of a holy God (Hebrews 9:27). The reincarnation concept takes the pressure off of men by delaying, or even entirely eliminating the judgment of God. But it is very clear that God will judge each man according to the things he has done while in the body (2 Corinthians 5:10).

This should be sobering, and even frightening, when we think of the things we have done throughout our lives and the fact that God is completely holy and just, and cannot tolerate anything less than perfection to enter His presence. But God's character is also merciful and He is "a shield for all those who take refuge in him" (2 Samuel 22:31). This was proven by the life of Jesus, who came to live a perfect life and then die as a perfect sacrifice which (by its perfection and its eternal nature) could satisfy the justice of God on our behalf. Every man and woman must stand before God. Those who trust in their own good works to save them will fall short (Romans 3:20). But all who trust in Christ's righteousness rather than their own will be saved (John 3:16–18; Romans 5:1–2; 1 John 2:2).

To the Stoics and Pythagoreans the term “palingenesis” was equivalent to metempsychosis or reincarnation. By reconstructing plants from their own ashes the alchemists sought to prove not only that consciousness and intelligence survive the annihilation of the psychical structure, but that they retain the individuality they formerly possessed and remain as organized forces. The term palingenesis was also used to indicate the rebirth of the universe from its periodic sleep or the replenishment of the earth after a cataclysm, such as the Flood. The ancient philosophers, considering the planet as a living organism, attributed to it those various phases of life through which all forms seemingly pass: birth, growth, and decay. In India the alternating periods of cosmic activity and inertia are referred to as the Days and Nights of Brahma. Schopenhauer used the term palingenesis to signify the survival of the will and its manifestation in new personalities. Some students of Hermetic philosophy affirm that by means of palingenesis it would be possible to resurrect the human body even at a long interval after death. Those attempting this experiment attacked their problem without a proper understanding of the issues involved, for no Hermetic formula should be taken literally. Palingenesis is actually the resurrection of the spiritual soul from the irrational material organism. The human body is the Hermetic bottle. The Tree if the Soul is burned by human degeneracy; by palingenesis, however, it is proved that no matter how low man may descend in vice and degradation the spiritual elements are not lost, but can be reassembled by alchemical art, and the Tree of Life caused to grow again within the human nature.

(واژه هاى دیگر عبارتند از rebirth به معناى تولد دوباره که بیشتر در ادیان هندى به کار مى رود, reincarnatio به معناى تجسد دوباره, palingenesis از یونانى: palin+genesis به معناى تکوین« دوباره و metensomatosis از واژه یونانى به معناى meta+soma جسم«دوباره.) در منابع اسلامى علاوه بر اصطلاح تناسخ, گاه از واژه هاى دیگرى چون عود, نقل یا انتقال نفس و رجعت روح (که البته با رجعت اصطلاحى در نزد شیعه متفاوت است) استفاده شده است. چهار اصطلاح نَسخ, مَسخ, رسخ و فسخ معمولاً اقسام تناسخ شمرده شده اند و به ترتیب بر انتقال روح انسان به جسم انسان ,حیوان, گیاه و جماد دلالت دارند (ایجى, 374; تهانوى, ذیل واژه (تناسخ); براى تعاریف دیگر, نک: ابن حزم, 1/165; حلى, 399; سبزوارى, 5/195).
اصطلاح تناسخ معمولاً جامع همه اقسام پیش گفته است. دو قسم تناسخ صعودى و نزولى را نیز براى اشاره به سیر از مراتب پایین به بالا و به عکس به کار برده اند. براى مثال انتقال روح از جسم انسان به جسم گیاه, تناسخ نزولى است و عکس آن, تناسخ صعودى نام دارد. تناسخ هم چنین به معناى فرا رفتن از جسم انسانى ـ براى مثال تعلق یافتن به اجرام سماوى یا تبدیل شدن به ملائک ـ به کار رفته است (طبرسى, 2/344; ایجى, همان جا, ملاصدرا, 3/438).

صورت هاى مختلفى از اعتقاد به تناسخ از قدیم ترین ایام در سراسر جهان وجود داشته است. سابقه این اعتقاد حتى بنا به شواهدى ـ البته بحث انگیز ـ ممکن است به دوره پارینه سنگى باز گردد. در میان جوامع متمدن, هند از قدیمى ترین منابع این اعتقاد است. در آیین هاى مختلف هندى, از جمله آیین بودا, هندو, جاین و سیک, از دیرباز صورت هاى متنوعى از تناسخ رایج بوده است (نک: ابوریحان بیرونى, تحقیق ماللهند). امروزه نیز تأثیر و جاذبه آیین بوداست که اهمیت مفهوم تناسخ را هم در سطح فرهنگ عمومى و هم در مباحث تخصصى فلسفه دین که عمدتاً ناظر به مسیحیت بوده, افزایش داده است. یونانیان باستان تناسخ را مى شناختند, اما خاستگاه این اعتقاد در میان آنان به درستى معلوم نیست. یونانیان خاستگاه اعتقاد به تناسخ را مصر مى دانستند, البته درباره صحت این انتساب تردید وجود دارد (براى اطلاعات بیشتر, نک: دایرةالمعارف دین, ذیل مدخلِ Transmigration و Reincarnation; دایرةالمعارف دین و اخلاق, ذیل Transmigration, Greek and Roman).
افلاطون ـ احتمالاً به پیروى از سنت فیثاغورثى ـ اورفه اى ـ فرض تناسخ را در چند رساله از جمله فایدون, فدروس, جمهور و تیمائوس مطرح کرد. همین سنّت از افلاطون به نوافلاطونیان و گنوسیان (Gnostics) منتقل شد. در مسیحیت فرقه هاى مختلف گنوستیک مانند کاتارها (Cathars) از جمله فرقه آلبیگائیان (Albigenses) و مانویان, آن را ادامه دادند. در جهان اسلام, رواج فلسفه یونان و نیز تأثیر و حضور مانویت از اسباب تداوم آن نزد فیلسوفانى چون محمد بن زکریاى رازى و احتمالاً الاهى دانانى چون ابن ابى العوجاء شد (براى تفصیل قول رازى درباره تناسخ نک: محمدابن زکریاى رازى, 284ـ286; 96ـ97; ابوحاتم رازى, 12, 62). همین جریان نزد یهودیان از طریق مانویت و فلسفه نوافلاطونى بر اهل قباله اثر نهاد (نک: دایرةالمعارف دین, همان جا دایرةالمعارف دین و اخلاق, ذیل Transmigration, دایرةالمعارف یهود, ذیل Gilgul; شولم, 242ـ243, 250, 280ـ284).

تناسخ یک مفهوم مرتبط با سرنوشت پس از مرگ است. پس از مرگ, یا انسان فنا مى شود, یا روحى مستقل از جسم که با مرگ جسم نمى میرد بقاى انسان را به صورت مجرد و بدون جسم تضمین مى کند, یا بقاى انسان از طریق اعاده جسم یا از طریق رستاخیز روح و جسم با هم در روز قیامت تأمین مى شود و یا روح در همین دنیا در بدن هاى متعدد به حیات خود ادامه مى دهد. هم چنین با توجه به بحث عالم مثال نزد بعضى فیلسوفان اسلامى, مى توان فرض کرد که انسان از طریق بدنى مثالى بقا داشته باشد. البته, باید توجه داشت که هرچند باور به حیات پس از مرگ عموماً متضمن اعتقاد به امرى غیر جسمانى و جدا از بدن مادى بوده است, باور به روح به معنایى که در غرب و جهان اسلام وجود دارد لازمه تناسخ نیست, چنان که در مکتب تراوادا در آیین بودا هیچ جوهر نفسانى پایدارى وجود ندارد (نک: دایرةالمعارف دین, ذیل Transmigration).
هسته مفهوم تناسخ همان حضور روح در جهان جسمانى پس از مرگ است, اما علل و دلایل اعتقاد به آن و کارکرد آن در نظام هاى مختلف فکرى بسیار متنوع است. اصولاً از آن جا که تناسخ در زمینه هاى متفاوتى شکل گرفته است, ادله رد یا اثبات آن نیز متنوع و تابع زمینه تکوین آن بوده اند. درباره بسیارى از معتقدان به تناسخ نمى توان از دلیل اعتقاد سخن گفت, بلکه باید به اسباب و علل رجوع کرد. این امر به ویژه درباره فرهنگ هاى ابتدایى مصداق دارد. جاندارپندارى (Animism) یا نسبت دادن نفس به اشیاء غیر جاندار از عللى است که زمینه روانى این اعتقاد را در میان مردمان بدوى ایجاد کرده است. هم چنین تناسخ در ارتباط با نگرش بدوى به دورى بودن سرشت وجود که مستلزم بازگشت نیاکان به زندگى است, پدید آمده است.

آموزه سرشت دورى وجود در مراحل متأخرتر فرهنگى نیز نزد بسیارى از معتقدان به تناسخ مشاهده مى شود; براى مثال اوریگن, متکلم مسیحى قرن سوم, هم به تناسخ معتقد است و هم به تکرار دایره وار رخدادها (دایرةالمعارف کاتولیک, ذیل Origen و metempsychosis). در میان اقوام ابتدایى به و یژه در استرالیاى مرکزى و غرب آفریقا تناسخ با توتمیسم (Totemism) و کیش پرستش نیاکان همراه است که یکى از علل آن شباهت نسل هاست, امرى که موجب تصور بازگشت نسل پیشین به صورت اخلاف خود مى شده است. در فرهنگ هاى پیشرفته تر تناسخ در زمینه اى اخلاقى بسط مى یابد. وضع خوب یا بد هرکس در زندگى, نتیجه اعمال او در زندگى یا زندگى هاى سابق خود او تلقى مى شود. در آیین هندو حتى خود فرایند تناسخ نوعى کیفر شمرده مى شود که باید از آن گریخت (براى اطلاعات بیشتر, نک: دایرةالمعارف دین و اخلاق, ذیل Transmigration, introductory and primitive).
علت و غایت و نحوه تحقق جریان تناسخ نیز متنوع است. در بعضى صورت هاى تناسخ, تأکید بر انتقال روح انسان به جسم انسان دیگر است, اما صورت هاى دیگرى هم وجود دارد که انتقال به بدن حیوان یا گیاه یا جماد را در بر مى گیرد. هم چنین به رغم آن چه در آغاز به نظر مى رسد, تناسخ مستلزم وجود پیشین روح, یعنى قِدَم آن نیست; برخى معتقدان به تناسخ معتقد به حدوث روح بوده اند و حتى برخى از تناسخیان جهان اسلام به معاد جسمانى اعتقاد داشته اند (نک: ابن مرتضى, 74, فخر رازى, 1, 7/201). درباره زمان رخ دادن تناسخ عقیده رایج آن است که بلافاصله پس از مرگ صورت مى گیرد, اما این امر به معناى رخ دادن آن بر روى زمین نیست, زیرا تناسخ مى تواند در مکان دیگرى مثل آسمان واقع شود. علاوه بر این, در مواردى یک دوره موقت میان لحظه مرگ و لحظه تناسخ فرض مى شود. این فرض ها و امکان ها فرضیه تناسخ را از ابطال پذیرى تجربى مصون مى دارد (نک: دایرةالمعارف فلسفه, ذیل Reincarnation).

ییکى از عام ترین و عمده ترین زمینه هاى اعتقاد به تناسخ, تصور اصالت روح و نفى دخالت جسم در هویت انسان است. در آیین هاى هندى, در تفکر اورفه اى فیثاغورثى و از آن جا نزد افلاطون و نوافلاطونیان و در بسیارى فرقه هاى گنوستیک چنین تصورى مشاهده مى شود. مطابق این تصور, انسان همان روح یا نفس مجردى است که در جسم مادى اسیر است و وقتى حیات حقیقى مى یابد که از قید تن رها گردد. بر این اساس, کسى که پاکى و تجرد لازم براى چنان حیاتى را در طول زندگى دنیوى خود کسب نکند به ناچار از جهان معنوى باز نمى ماند و به جسم باز مى گردد تا زمانى که به تمامى تزکیه شود. در مقابل, ادیان ابراهیمى بر مبناى نگرش خود به وجود انسان که مشعر بر اهمیت توأمان جسم و روح در هویت انسان است, از رستاخیز یا معاد جسمانى دفاع کرده و تناسخ را رد کرده اند. لفظ و مفهوم تناسخ در قرآن نیامده است و اصطلاح مسخ از اقسام تناسخ, با مفهوم قرآنى مسخ متفاوت است.
مسخ در قرآن بر معنایى دلالت دارد که در زبان انگلیسى با لفظ metamorphosis نشان داده مى شود و تغییر شکل جسم انسان به صورت حیوان را مى رساند. این شباهت لفظى موجب شده است که بعضى از معتقدان به تناسخ, براى تأیید عقیده خود به آیات حاکى از مسخ استناد کنند. با این حال, تعالیم قرآن درباره معاد و سیر خطى تاریخ و حیات انسان ها چنان روشن است که ناسازگارى آن با تناسخ را براى مسلمانان راست کیش, مسلّم کرده است. با رواج اعتقاد به تناسخ در میان مسلمانان که از نخستین سده هاى هجرى و در میان غُلاة آغاز مى شود, روایات و احادیث ناظر به تناسخ نیز پدید آمده است. در روایات اهل سنت و شیعه به تناسخ اشاره شده و اعتقاد به آن محکوم شده است. حدیث شیعى (من قال/دان بالتناسخ فهو کافر) از این جمله است (براى نمونه احادیث شیعى نک: صدوق, 1/218; حر عاملى, 28/341; مجلسى, 4/320ـ321, 10/176ـ177, 25/136, 273; براى نمونه احادیث اهل سنت نک: جصاص 2/55; ابن حجر, 2/155).
